Favicon Generator
Generate multi-size icons and a favicon.ico
What is Favicon Generator?
This favicon generator takes one image and produces PNGs from 16 to 512 pixels, hand-assembles a favicon.ico containing the 16, 32, and 48 pixel variants, and gives you the HTML link tags modern browsers expect. Everything is generated in the browser.
How to use Favicon Generator
- 1Choose a square image of at least 512×512 pixels.
- 2Review the preview at each size and download individual PNGs as needed.
- 3Download favicon.ico and place it at the root of your site.
- 4Paste the HTML snippet into the head of your pages.
Frequently asked questions
Do I still need a favicon.ico file?+
Yes, but only as a fallback. Modern browsers prefer the PNG or SVG icons you declare in the head, while some older browsers and tools still request /favicon.ico from the site root directly. Shipping an .ico with the 16, 32, and 48 pixel sizes costs almost nothing and keeps your logs free of 404s.
What is each favicon size used for?+
16 and 32 pixels serve browser tabs and bookmarks; 48 is used for Windows desktop shortcuts; 180 is the iOS apple-touch-icon; and 192 and 512 are referenced by the PWA manifest and used for Android home screen icons.
What should I keep in mind when designing a favicon?+
At 16 pixels there is essentially no room for detail — text and thin strokes in a logo blur into mush. The right approach is to design a simplified mark for the small sizes, usually keeping just one recognizable symbol, rather than shrinking the full logo.
